The King’s Speech

May 4th, 2011

If you’ve seen the academy award winning film “The King’s Speech,” you’ve seen a lot of great-looking microphones.  In fact, the actual microphones used by the British royal family to deliver speeches to the nation were shown in the film, but only in the background.  In addition, three other priceless microphones dating to 1923 with gilt, silver and chrome details bearing the royal coats of arms and other insignia, were dug up from the vaults of British music company EMI and used to record music for the film at Abbey Road Studios.

"It was exciting to know we had the very microphone used by King George VI, the central character of this film, and I thought how appropriate and inspiring it would be to have the microphones present at our recording sessions," Peter Cobbin, senior recording engineer at Abbey Road Studios, said in a statement.

Cobbin spotted the original microphones at the EMI archives in Middlesex, outside London, years earlier and brought them back to life when the score, composed by Alexandre Desplat, was recorded at Abbey Road studios.

Here’s the microphone shown in the film:

And here’s the actual microphone used by George the VI

The big question is, does it still work? Click here to find out! http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-12580470

Nick and elyssa: here and gone again

April 18, 2011

This month, Mr. and Mrs. Morrill worked in a quick visit while visiting family to sketch out the broad strokes of an exciting new project. Their focus this next year will also include building out their home studio in Thailand.

Janelle and Andrew: going going… gone!

May 1st, 2011

Seems like every time we get a really strong band together, someone has a huge personal success and moves away!  Fortunately, this has minimal impact since we specialize in cloud collaboration.  Janelle and Andrew (the collective voice of “Gonna Get You”) are off to the great state of Texas later this month.  While we’ll miss their smiling faces, we look forward to remote collaboration on many more projects in the months and years ahead.  Safe travels!

The Good Kind of Feeback!
We continue to receive terrific feedback on the Cubase 6 tutorials.  Here are a few quotes pulled from the Steinberg User’s Forum:

Our next tutorial is in production!
It’s sometimes a challenge to keep you updated on all the cool projects we have going on.  Building the tutorials for new software means you have to get the new software long before it’s released (often before it’s even announced) which usually means... you can't talk about it!  But, we are in production on another exciting video for one of our international clients.  The video will be announced and released mid-May.  Stay Tuned!
